Chants of a Lifetime, from Synagogue to Opera

Cantor Sheldon F. Merel, Tenor

Cantor Sheldon F. Merel

Hats off and applause for Sheldon Merel’s spectacular CD, “Standing Ovation”, with an eclectic selection of 21 songs recorded live-in-concerts over a period of years.

It contains powerful Hebrew liturgical pieces, Italian love songs and opera (La Boheme), Broadway hit tunes ( such as “Maria” from West Side Story), a delightful medley of Chanukah songs, excerpts from a contemporary Passover Oratorio (in English), and charming novelty songs, all with fine accompaniment by various orchestral and choral groups. Cantor Merel is a great American lyric tenor, whose voice is irresistible, and his interpretations spell binding.

His songs can leave you breathless… or chuckling. After hearing his CD, you’ll know why audiences give him Standing Ovations!

The compact disc comes with a brochure rich with information about this nationally acclaimed artist, and augmented with translations, commentary and photos.

The release of Sheldon Merel’s Second CD brings highlights of his amazing career as cantor and concert artist. All the selections were recorded live either in-concert pr during services. The CD includes liturgical favorites from the Sabbath, Holy Days, vocal styles of Eastern European virtuoso cantors and contemporary Jewish composers.

There is a setting of Kiddush by Broadway composer, Kurt Weill, a portion from a Sabbath Jazz Service and an excerpt from a Passover Oratorio.

The Kaddish of Levi Yitzchok is a fascinating story of the Rabbi who stopped a Holy Day service in the 19th century to hold a court of law with God.

For opera lovers, Cantor Merel sings dramatic tenor arias from La Juive (the Jew) and La Traviata.

The large plastic case holds an easy to read booklet with translations and background stories to make your listening a delight!

Sheldon Merel, a graduate of the Hebrew Union College-School of Sacred Music
is Cantor Emeritus of Congregation Beth Israel in San Diego and has served congregations in Canada and the United States.
